Book Description
While people are learning about the identities and
accomplishments of
various racial and ethnic minorities, Jewish identity and accomplishments
are ignored. Programs educate and sensitize people to racism, sexism,
and
homophobia, but antisemitism is overlooked. The purpose of this book is
to
get Jews and Jewish issues included within the multicultural curriculum.
The author begins by presenting information about Judaism and Jewish
cultures. The racial, ethnic, and religious differences among Jews are
presented in order to inform readers about the extent of diversity within
the Jewish community. Judaism as a religion is presented in terms of its
basic values and the impact that these values and the practices that follow
from them have had on Western civilization. This material is important
because it dispels misconceptions that many people have regarding Judaism.
Also, because multicultural writers typically ignore the vast impact of
Jews
and Jewish culture on the origin and development of psychotherapy, a chapter
is devoted to documenting the role that Jews have played in the evolution
of the profession.

Demographic Dimensions of Diversity Relevant for Extension Educators: What to Look For, Why, and Where To Find the Data: This document lists basic demographic variables related to diversity that are relevant for Extension educators, discusses why the variables are important, and provides links to data sources for the different variables at different levels of geographic detail. Data are available at the state, county and sub-county levels, such as the Census tract level. Most of the data are also available at different points in time, allowing basic trends to be identified.

Facing
Issues of Diversity: Rebirthing the Extension Service: Call
it diversity, multiculturalism, or pluralism--this issue, brought to the
forefront mainly by demographic changes, is on the minds of Extension
professionals throughout the country. In a recent diversity workshop at
the National Family and Consumer Science meeting, 60 professionals from
every region of the United States gathered to discuss and learn about
the issue of diversity. Meeting the needs of the growing Hispanic population
seemed to be foremost on the minds of these family and consumer science
professionals.

The Changing Face of the Rural West: The WRDC is working in conjunction with western extension faculty to produce a series of information briefs called The Changing Face of the Rural West. The goal of the information briefs is to highlight aspects of regional population change that might be going unrecognized but that might have important long-term implications. Each information brief will conclude with a section that raises-but does not attempt to answer-important policy questions that arise from the demographic data. The first brief in the series, Rapid Growth of Hispanic Populations in Western States, is authored by Eddy Berry (Utah State University) and Annabel Kirschner (Washington State University).
Pathways Reaffirmed: ECOP has supported an updated strategic plan for diversity for the Extension System called Pathways to Diversity. The Extension Diversity Task Force in concert with an appointed ad hoc committee developed and adopted an updated Pathways. The original was written for the system ten years ago but is seen as still relevant today. See above link to the original document.
Collaborating
Across Generations
There
are many important issues to address in today's workplace and diversity
is among them. As we know, diversity is more than just race or skin color.
Diversity includes; ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, culture,
size, abilities, and age along with many other attributes. This month's
diversity topic is focusing on the multi-generational workplace and the
richness that it brings as well as some of the challenges. "You can't
teach an old dog new tricks", "These young people don't have
any work ethic", "The old timers will not listen to anything
new". Some of these statements may sound familiar, they are stereotypes
attributed to people of different generations. In Webster's New World
Dictionary, generation is defined in several ways: "4. The average
period (about thirty years) between the first of one generation and that
of the next; 5a. all of the people born and living at about the same time;
b. a group of such people with the same experience, belief, attitude,
etc. in common". Some may wonder why examining generations, as an
aspect of diversity is relevant. The answer is that conflicts can and
do occur based on misunderstandings between the generations. These conflicts
can occur at home as well as at work. For more information on generations
at work, go to http://hr.ag.ohio-state.edu/resources/resources_issues.html
Here you will find handouts and a powerpoint presentation on multi-generations
